r|break: i've been missing san diego ...

... with its wonderful weather, easy to get out & about around its here & there-ness, and friends.

where am i? ... admittedly, lately there are weekends when i wake up and start thinking of things to do - forgetting i'm in the bay area and planning to head to places as if i'm living in san diego. whoops! but i do loves me my bay area and i just misses me my san diego ... and spending time with friends in san diego.

mission federal (?!) little italy artwalk ... one of the things i used to do regularly - attend artwalks, and i especially enjoyed the annual little italy artwalk - convenient, restaurants, shops, etc ... back in 2006, just a few memory shots (here & here). and back in 2007, just about 6 mos. after moving back to the BA, headed down for artwalk (here). didn't go last year; a bit more of "too much for me" than the artwalk i enjoyed in years past. and now it's mission federal artwalk.

stalking an artist in san diego can be fun ... and rewarding! well, i didn't really stalk her, but i fell in love with her work one afternoon when i was hanging out at a local coffee shop (urban grind on park boulevard). called her up, had dinner with her, saw a few more pieces of hers, and then fell in love with her. i made a new friend, kelly (paige standard), who is a wonderfully talented and awesome person! kelly's work is OVER HERE on her site. and plumeria sits on my mantel with a few other floral pieces.

(oh(!) that commission idea sits somewhere in my thoughts.
i know it will emerge one day ... some day soon.)

"hey to y'all in san diego and formerly in san diego!" ... i guess i just wanted to remind myself to say "hey!" to my friends in san diego and visit san diego sooner than later. and perhaps, some folks will head up to the bay area and also visit!

SD dude in BA at OAK when i got back from DEN

"don't you just hate waiting for people?!"

i thought it was just the obnoxious smoker that was lurking behind me while i was curbside at OAK (aka the oakland airport).

turns out i actually knew the obnoxious smoker. he recognized me from my logo fleece. meet jason ... from SD. he was working for a client i had (scary-ish client, but interesting & challenging!)

chance encounter? let's see ...

• me - coming back home from DEN
  
• jason - arriving from SD to attend an AWWA conference in oakland
  
• my ride was late ~ 1-hour; i was curbside at terminal 1 (and there is lots of curbside from which to choose)
  
• jason was smoking a cig at terminal 1, while waiting for his wife who was picking up their luggage at terminal 2 (like WAY the heck on the other side of OAK)

jason didn't know i moved up to the BA. anyway ... go figure.

ba dating ... prep work?

2 years ago ... 2 friends and i were bantering & lamenting about dating, on-line dating, and the like. (admittedly, i'd gone through a dating service while in san diego - story snippets over here!) for a little blog (re)fodder and hopefully something to spur the writing bug, below is what my friend twa (aka tom) shared for profile posting. enjoy!

yesterday ... twa, lw, and i had quite the e-banter on dating and on-line dating, in particular ... i am taking twa up on his insight & advice for "one-month" trial period - through mid-february 2007.

Before I share my insight regarding singles ads, I want to say a little bit about my background. Over the past ten years I have spent between 4 to 6 hours each day at work surfing the web reading classified ads written by women in ages ranging from 12 to 85 years old. Based on hundreds of hours of research, I have seen the following:

In these ads, younger women are not afraid to show photos of themselves in all types of nearly nude situations (example washing their car in a next to nothing bathing suit, or showing off their favorite underwear). With these types of photos the younger women will write something like: “Do you want to hookup tonight?”. For purely scientific reasons, I have tried to send emails to these types of ads but the mailboxes are always full with the thousands of other guys trying to meet these women.

I have noticed that as women get older they become more careful and start to show photos of themselves wearing a heavy sweater sitting in an overstuffed chair with a little cat or dog in their lap. These women will write something like: “Looking for a man with season tickets to the opera.”. Now I can guess why these older women are being more careful with their ads. They are worried about attracting the wrong type of man. The problem is, with the careful ad the few men that do respond are gutless Nancy boys that are in their forties and still living with their mom. Being careful with a singles ad is like trying to catch a fish without putting bait on the hook. Dating is like catching fish. Don’t worry about which fish you are going to catch. Instead, try to catch as many fish as possible. Use a huge gill net. Catch hundreds of fish. Get the fish in the boat. Once in the boat, look at each fish closely. If you like one of these fish, put it in the storage tank in the boat for later use. If you don’t like one of the fish, hit it in head with a hammer and throw it out of the boat.

With the gill net approach to singles ads, the photos need to show your best features. They do not need to be full body shots. Just close-up shots of the more important parts of the body. Warning --- do not cover-up these body parts too much in the photos. Men are stupid and need to be shown things clearly. The same approach needs to be taken in the write-up. Say things like: “Its been too long since my last parade. I want to ride on a float tonight.” OK – with the gill net type singles ad, you will get many many responses. Accept all of them. However, remember to bring your hammer with you on all first dates. You will need to use if often before you find a really good fish.

twa's clarification on the gill net after lw and my comment re: weeding fish out early-on ...

Here is the problem with trying to adjust the gill net, it is impossible to know which are the nasty fish at first. You must catch them first. Then decide if the fish is nasty. If you try to adjust the gill net, you will start losing fish. Some of those fish that you lost will be keepers. Due to all of the interest that will be generated with the gill net approach, you must manage your time. Try scheduling several dates for a single day (1 hour difference in starting time). If you hate the guy, act like you a going to puke and have him let you out of the car (do this within 15 minutes). You should practice this puking act to get is right. Go on the next date scheduled in the next hour. If you like the guy, just go out of the date and leave the other guys hanging. Chances are they were nasty fish anyway.

[side bar from lw to me: you must come over for a weekend so we can practice our fake vomiting technique. twa, I NEVER would have thought of this, you really are on to something here.]

A couple of comments regarding photos.

• Put in a couple of more showing cleave (this of course is a major selling point with men. You may want to use Photoshop for a zoomed in shot.).
  
• Get rid of photos showing you with other men (I know these types of photos show that you have men friends and you are social and all, but men do not like competition at right out of the gate.
  
• Men want to think that you have no other men in your life at the moment.).
  
• Get rid of the photos showing you having fun with big fake animals (I know these types of photos show that you like having fun and can be goofy at times – but remember that right out of the gate men are only thinking about one thing – getting lucky.
  
• Photos showing you being goofy may indicate that you will laugh when a guy gets naked in front of you for the first time. This will kill a good buzz.)
  
• Keep the photos with you and your girlfriends (in the back of all men’s minds is the idea of a possible 3-way).
  
• Keep the photos of you drinking the hard stuff (also in the back of all men’s minds is the idea that I will get her drunk and have my way with her on the first date).

I like the write-up. It has good energy, it is not too long, and it highlights the fact that you are a professional. The only thing I would add is some reference to a dark past that you are trying to run from. Say something like: “Working in my new office in the bay area overlooking the Golden Gate bridge is a far cry from my days in Las Vegas working as an adult entertainer.” You do not need to be specific on what type of adult entertainment you did (let them guess).

And maybe add something about your amazing flexibility too.

Correct. The idea here is to show that you are a little bit crazy.
Not crazy like: Sometimes I stab people because they look at me funny.
Crazy like: I can’t help it but I’m crazy in bed.

some tips learned so far --- gill net, hammer, puke, cleavage, ... and there are more. (i haven't added my banter or some of lw's interim banter --- for it is the wisdom of twa we share today!)

i recently have thought about how much i am grateful for my friend, deb, who introduced me to the poetry of mary oliver. perhaps it's the variety of emotions stirred when i read and reflect on her writing. or rather, it's the reflective mood for which i've been intensely experiencing (more so than normally) that has drawn me to read her poetry. below is most of the post from a couple of years ago.

(i'm reposting stuff most of this week (except for a reminder for the top chef folks). gots me some bi'ness going on this week - may be entertaining a friend or two and not yet sure if i need to do a last-minute down to SD or ?)

... which was a contributing factor to cubeopolis frivolity. cubeopolis frivolity started with a bit of a "mock" of project runway's 4th season. this repost was very early on in the season - episodes 1 & 2. (oh! and i had not yet discovered mr. dust - who is numero uno!)

just as i did last year (!), i do so this year.
i LOVES ME my wednesday nights.

and as importantly, i loves me my project rungay.

bobble-me ... last september, i ordered the tim gunn bobblehead. he arrived just in time for me to drive up with him from SD to BA last year. how happy was i?! A-DDICT-TED! well, the new season has started. yesterday evening was episode 3. therefore, 2 episodes have wrapped up - and two designers have been auf'd.

an homage ... fortunately, on thursday morning around the figurative water cooler, there are other "prw" fanatics fans, and conversations abound! as a result, someone(s) (!) has/have instigated a little something-something and the result? well ... one of the results - a moment of paying homage to one something/someone in the episode - a designer, a designer's creation, a judge, ... whatever. the inspiration? ... just something or someone.

office supplies/recyclables/compostables/resuables (and sometimes not-so-recyclables) and whatever is in cube-opolitan are our friends ... the self-imposed initial rule of an homage? must be constructed with our aforementioned friends. no fabric, thread, needles, etc. are allowed. design elements/construction must account for a noticeable portion of the homage. the completed homage is then showcased among other prw fanatics fans (and judges) for a 2-5 minute event down the make-shift runway.

judging is completely voluntary, so it's kinda tough to recruit judges for the 2-5 minute gig. but for weekly pics of the judging panel, we don't have too much to offer them - except our gratitude.

episode 1 homage

you can check out episode 1 on any of the sites previously mentioned. i'll just get to the nitty-gritty. "junk in the trunk" homage was all about elisa! (btw, elisa is still "in".) you can check out a review of elisa's design over here.

so i poached some pics from the boys and project rungay, so you can see the inspiration of the homage.





let's break it down ... simply put - office sh** is binder-clipped (various sizes of binder clips) to my black skirt. you can't see the boots (which are actually matching), but they are there.
the office sh**? ... let's see - my beige jacket, my red hoodie, a stuffed gorilla animal with boxing gloves and a towel around its neck, a small stuffed space alien, a small stuffed panda, a small stuffed brown bear, 2 little iplops (blue with dots & bright green solid), a plastic grocery bag, a small s.f. giants penant, and 1 giant pixy stick (from a self-appointed cube-ster fashion assistant).

episode 2 homage

"poca-haunt-us"

again, you can check out episode 2 on any of the sites previously mentioned. just as before - i'll just get to the nitty-gritty.

"poca-haunt-us" homage - which was showcased wednesday at ~ 10:30 AM (PST) was all about marion! (tear. he's been auf'd.) you can check out a review of marion's design over here. and again, pic poaching from the boys.

let's break it down ... this week's homage* was practically all recyclable and compostable with java jackets delightfully and cleverly stapled to what was once a shwag tote bag and with shredded paper that was taped to the "hem" of the one-quarter panel.

the homage represented one-quarter of the designers creation. (we didn't have enough material for the full homage.)

the office sh** for yesterday's homage consisted of the following: tape, staples, a reusable tote that was cut up with scissors, shredded paper, a scarf (which held up the make-shift off-shoulder effect), more tape and staples, and many-many-many "coffee java jackets" that were opened up and stabbed with scissors for "holes" to provide some texture (as one prw fan commented). the java jackets were then "woven" and stapled to the 1/4-panel.

and to carry-forward one of the judges remarks - a head band was fashioned from two java jackets that were stapled in the back (to each other ... not to my head). hence, the name of this week's homage.

the homage will remain on display in my cubicle for a little cube-o-rama. an index card provides a description of the homage.

*[... and to think that i ONLY had the 1/4-panel and taped shredded paper for what i thought would be **the** final homage. angel guides showed up inspiration hit at the last minute when i was collecting the java jackets to take to the composting bin. we all had been talking about what a bummer it was that there wasn't a burlap bag laying around cube-opolitan (although that would be odd to have found one). them java jackets are just kinda the same color, eh? i was going to just go with the java jackets side by side then a 'founding cube-ster father' of our little prw fan club came up with the VERY CLEVER idea to 'weave' the jackets. and a last minute touch, while getting read to parade down the runway - the scarf for that off-shoulder look from last week's assistant. fabu!]

retro: and last august ...

... in 2007, here are tidbits of just a year ago (that kind of seems like yesterday at times),

• san diego visit ... in the beginning of the month - over at coronado for a break and brunch was a must - along with other (drinking) activities filled in between and around those events.
  
  this year, will be pseudo-vacationing in SD in late-september. specifics to be later posted. gotta say "bon viaje" to sha! (and congrats!)
  
  
• home stuff ... my home was burglarized by some skinny-ass-punk-shithead(s) [SAPS] on 08/20 (a little shout out here). as a result, i did learn about actions to take (part 3, which includes links to parts 1 and 2) after a burglary (because magz has taught me there always is a silver lining to speak of - and magz is wise. we **heart** magz).
  
  and no - the stolen goods were never retrieved. credit card charges by SAPS were dismissed by amex. and it's a small law enforcement world.

• high school stuff ... i was reminded that as a kid, i used to sew. and although i didn't get l.a.g. into the toothpick dress that i sewed, maybe there is still some reason to do something with the dress in the current pr5air activities.
  
  
• friend visits ... and pays (well, i think the company pays, or not - not sure) for a mega-meal, coupled with enjoyable conversation!
  
  
• blog stuff ... i continued with the friday's feast meme AND my weekend activities were posted for r|alex. i stalked spinning girl. not so much friday's feast lately, but i still take pics of food. some r|alex here & there, but certainly not consistent. and must re-stalk sg.
  
  
• alumni moments ... with a picnic reunion of sorts of college folks (which followed a happy hour reunion the day before).
  
  for this year, still figuring out with my buddy (a) when the next gathering will be, as well as WHERE the next gathering will be - given that alums live throughout the greater BA.
  
  
• work stuff ... in the beginning of the month, i wrote a thank you e/m after an interview for a position that i eventually accepted and then promptly saw a matinee movie (which ended up being quite apropos) that very afternoon.

ANNIVERSARY ... today marks my being in the BA for 1-yr after leaving SD on 10/24 with stuff packed in my little car - sh** and those ever so must have with me items in my car (... the stuff that if the movers lost or broke, i'd be bummed big time).

AM TOTALLY MELANCHOLY ... so i decided to revisit (via blog posts) the last 2 months of being in SD and stuff i did to pass the time ...

• procrastinated: (tho's there were certainly more techniques, just a few)
  
• on-line game for procrastinating (which i did quite a bit) from packing and stuff;
• took time out for a (self)interview
• stalked photographer of my favorite picture and pal, pigdog
• moving business: moving quotes from various moving companies
• drinking: drinks (comp'd, of course) with socal friends for beer, wine, margaritas and martinis (with former interns), sangria, wine and martinis, outing with the gals for movie-beer-martinis
  
• eating: meals (comp'd, of course) at a place now closed, deli brunch (where i (errr ... we, unanimously) booted my only other corporate board member), fave places parallel 33 and vagabond for lunch - relunch - dinner, del mar's il fornaio, and more that i didn't post
  
• out & about relaxing: walks in the morning and evening 'round the neighborhood
  
• getting organized with a plan: weekly planning (reading this has totally tired me out for today)
• reunion: squeezed in (after movers dropped of stuff on 10/13 + before going back to SD for a week) the 25th h.s. reunion because i (the minion) made a deal with my friend, the devil

and a few of the best memories during the last SD days transitioning to BA days ...

• my addiction: made a new friend, b, who totally helped me out - physically packing and emotional support (aka - my weakness - the oatmeal-mango cookies from influx)
  
• angst on moving days:
• moving day in SD with long time friend, k, and watching movers leave with my stuff
• met the movers at the BA place
• dinner with friend who was being shipped off to iraq
  

and the day (10/24) i actually left SD with my car packed up

recap from start ... louis picked me up @ 5 pm (the agreed upon time), and i was not yet ready (of course) but not ready 'cuz 1/2-way through the blow-drying of the hair (prior to the straightening), the dryer started smoking ... and smoke alarm went off. (nice touch) took requisite pic w/dapper-looking-louis! (nice shoes, dude!) left ~ 5:20 pm to find out we'd be in traffic (880 north on a sat eve?! wtf?) ... so we missed the pre-reunion drinks at the hotel bar ... but there was another 'special bar' for the reunion folks.

to the sign-in table ... caught up with deb, pat, valerie, laura, ariel on our way **to** the bar ... as they were heading **to** the reunion area. also met jack, who was in our class, on the way to the sign-in. walked w/them all to reunion get our name tags. checked out all the other names (aka other attendees). drinks to the left + dinner/ballroom to the right. yeah ... we turned left!

"s/he looks totally the same!" ... "did we go to school w/that person?"... "what a cute dress?" ... "what does his name tag say?" ... "they are still together?!" ... "i don't think s/he'll remember me." ... "i'm going to say hi to him/her" ... "i had a crush on ___." ... "i'd like to see ___." ... "how many reunions have you attended?" ... "are there any teachers here?" ... "vodka gimlet over, please" ... "don't leave me alone" ... "where's my camera?" ... "how many kids?!" ... "and the top 5 are ___" ...

ballroom for dinner & dance ... tables of 10 ... and there were 8-9 tables ?! ... at ours - louis, me, laura, ariel, valerie, deb, pat, raelene, robert + empty. great table and great conversation! cameras all over the place. prime rib or chicken piccata or wild mushroom ravioli. survey says - not so great on the p-rib. chick o.k. and ravioli is ravioli. chocolate cake dessert - enough of a thumbs up. yes, spouses attended, also.

ReLo-ing from SD to BA
ReLo-ing is a northern california gal living in san diego longer than expected, business owner, cal berkeley grad, dog-owner wannabe, and hybrid car owner.

she's not a graphic artist. she's the convergence of env'l engineer (via the chem eng route), technical (and sometimes creative) writer, people observer (and listener), and woo-woo (and channeler).

she wants to develop and exercise her creativity - interests (lately) include vicariously living through those involved/dealing with typography, product design, graphic design, music, public space/art, and tattoos. (this list will be different tomorrow ... or actually within the hour.)

1. What talent would you most like to have?
. environmental designer or graphic designer (... o.k., how about being multilingual?!).

2. What is the best book you’ve ever read?
. harold and the purple crayon.

3. Who is your hero?
. in the make-believe world, harold (see answer 2). in the real world, harold (see answer 2).

4. What irks you?
. someone/anyone saying "irregardless" (more points for irking esp. in any debate and/or while scratching a chalkboard ... chalkboards still exist, right?).

5. What movie title could also be the title of your biography?
. ever after

6. Where would you like to wake up tomorrow morning?
. first of all, i just want to wake up ... and second of all, somewhere - on vacation.

7. What’s the new black?
. old black (is this a trick question?)

8. What will be your legacy?
. perhaps (compared to the 9 (nine!) others) logging more phone minutes way back in my corporate days and being told that "did not make sense" because I was also very productive. (uh ... could it be i didn't go to 20-million corporate meetings?!) ... o.k., taking this Q a l'il more seriously, i will be that gal who's an integral part of the start of the environmental professional development movement.

9. What is the most consistent conflict you face?
. keeping my back car seat uncluttered.

10. What is the best snack food?
. sunflower seeds - with shells and some salt (and a bag for the shells - but i don't snack either on the bag or the shells).
11. What is your most treasured possession?
. imagination.

12. Favorite artificial flavor?
. any of the sour fruit balls' flavors.

13. What is your greatest fear?
. a really-really-REALLY bad political decision that has international consequences.

14. You have an extra $100,000, whom or what will you give it to?
. a l'il to family, a l'il for myself (and the vacation, see answer 6. ), a l'il for my business, and a l'il to various non-profits that address women's issues, education, auto-immune disorders, the environment, and poverty.

15. Crunchy or smooth?
. smunchy

16. If you could master two tasks at one time what would they be? (ie: walking and talking etc)
. singing and playing an instrument - perhaps the piano, guitar, or tambourine.

17. What is the greatest invention of the past 100 years (give or take)?
. hmmm? magnetic closures ... uh, sign language ... no, uh, bar codes ... i guess i don't have a strong opinion (yet).

18. What is the most beautiful word in the English language?
. assuage.

19. Animal, mineral, vegetable?
. yes.

20. What’s next?
. shower, shampoo, shine ... and hunt and forage for brunch.

WOW! ALREADY?! last year today was when i had a visit from a moving company, who ultimately was selected to move me from SD to the BA - and as billN commented - who* ultimately charged me just a little more than was quoted. i can't believe that it's been a year, already!
