r|read: weekend magazine catch-up

back in may (over here), i was wondering, "who gave me this sfmag subscription?" well, i figured it out. as a member of kqed (our local pbs), i get this magazine.

as for the other magazines (and a little book i got about 2 years ago) i have been catching up on my reading this weekend. visit with me.

i was reminded this morning of three little books (amongst a freakin' sea of books on my bookshelves, floor, nightstands, t.v. console, kitchen counter, ...) i bought in sept '97 at the heathrow airport - on the way back stateside after a 13-day trip (and sometimes a death-march) through parts of spain and lisbon with 2 college girlfriends (and you know there are stories there!). so go amuse yourself while i try to get my weekend started (again) ...

• xenophobe's guides - i have the americans and spanish.
  
  
• bluffer's guides - i have the consultancy.
  
  
• management guides - they are 'for real' - so i have none.
  
  
• xenophobe's lingo learners - i have none but could be fun.

as if ... i'm a scanner [pt. 1]

aka how i'm passing my time ... for now

several months ago, i passed my time with a little bit of apartment therapy, and i've been "do-looping" between weeks 4 through 6. benefit? at least i have been ridding myself of stuff (and i have lots of stuff) and cooking (enough). however, i still have to do some of those repairs and improvements that i've listed ... bathroom caulking, dining room chairs, kitchen base board, kitchen nook area, etc. (and most recently, smoke alarm battery change-outs). so still chugging along ... chugging. along.

nevertheless, i've added yet another "... do stuff around the house" type thing in my life.

came across this when i stalked spinning girl who is doing a meme summer, which included mentioning daydreaming on paper. ultimately, i came across the reference to sher's book.

i am hooked ... well, at least because part of the "program" is to get a fabu journal (aka scanner daybook). and i LOVES me my stationery stuff - journals and pens and paper and stuff!

buy a journal ... there is encouragement to get a mega-journal (lots of pages, big writing space, neato-bandito looking, etc.), something that is cool and all. i didn't get a too fancy-shmancy one but i did get something with which i'm sure to write.

let's see how long this
"hipmt ... fn" extravaganza lasts.

i'm very hopeful this will be fruitful because it combines several happy past-times of mine ... writing, reading, reflecting, notetaking, observing, remembering, nostalgia, reasons to drink coffee, plans to do stuff, creativity ... procrastination - in a good way.

(SIDE NOTE: i'm also pal-ing up to woo-woo with ydh: ... with a friend, but i intend to have both co-exist.)

first entry - trial run ... small, recent idea that hasn't been given much thought and totally just go off on it. and i did. and if y'come to a tangent, go off on that for 20-min. and i did. meanwhile, also get some metrics - time started, time ended, and what resulted in stopping the trial run stuff.

insightful sh** for me, already.

i've been crazy-reading, lately.

... books. mags. blogs. on-line news. billboards. bumperstickers. peeps' slogan t-shirts. parking tickets. menus. cd tracks. bank statements. my old journals. itunes collection. txt msgs. sunscreen lotion tubes. food labels. and warning labels on electric cords.

enjoyed. this. book.

AND i also decided to pick up the ultimate david sedaris, which has 20 CDs. sure, i've read his books, have live at carnegie hall and have holidays on ice.

can't o.d. on sedaris.

secret santa for may day?

thank you to whomever bestowed upon me this magazine subscription to san francisco!!! the magazine showed up about a week ago. this evening - my read while kicking back with the fletch dvd.

this magazine joins a few other magainzes that i read more regularly than other magazines ... combined cycle journal . fine cooking . pink . (and yes, you read correctly ... ccj)

more of this weekend's relaxing moment(s)? maybe catch up on recorded shows/movies, so i can clean-up the queue and record some more shows/movies! finish the eco-thriller zodiac by neal stephenson and start another book. and then tomorrow? early start to pescadero for my ocean fix.

... after wk 1, i have continued to get stuff wrapped up, fill out more forms, buy cubicle goodies, and transition my business stuff.

for sunday morn, after already dealing w/some chores + errands, i've decided to take a quick breakfast break - coffee + scone at orchard valley coffee in campbell.

reading material? not yet with newspapers this morn - later. but yesterday, i picked up a very entertaining used book titled "officespeak: the win-win guide to touching base, getting the ball rolling, and thinking inside the box" by d.w. martin. this book is nutty-funny-sarcastic and guffaw-instigating(!), in public even!

(with more than a decade of having my own business, it's interesting to ponder.)

on the reading front ... an interesting book that i read quite a bit ago is po bronson's what should i do with my life? for which i have enjoyed and pondered many of the interesting stories. it's on tap during this pensive moment - all good, y'know.

new book to grace the bookshelves (which i gotta update my list!) in my relo'd place - as a reward for making benchmarks through the days ... i am going to pick up bill bradley's the new american story. what say?
