DF's representation of his low-impact living is a bit elitist. i'm thinking he's lost touch with his Long Island roots way up in the great white north. although i deem him...i mean a response to him [is] beneath me, I'll engage as a matter of defense.- on dining ... we eat veggies off the vine from our garden.
how much potable water do you use washing your napkins? - on kitchen supplies ... we use cloth towels as well, washed every couple of weeks.
- on heating ... we live where we rarely need heat or A/C. we also installed a tankless (on demand) water heater so we aren't heating water for no reason (unlike DF).
- food waste ... you waste food?
- on plastic bags ... we reuse our ziplock bags (when we use them). we bring out own cloth supermarket bags as well.
- on take out food ... we bring reusable containers for take out food or leftovers. we bring the cloth bags to carry the food.
- on transportation ... i carpool with 3 other coworkers on a regular basis. my company has a Natural Gas powered minivan [that] we drive to jobsites and on work related errands.
- on local food ... i and many coworkers partipate or have participated in community source agriculture procurement. a local farm drops bags of veggies twice a month for a small fee. we bring our bags, they fill them with veggies.
your company ... sells one renewable energy product.- my company ... GIVES away free information about all forms of
- green energy,
- green building methods,
- water conservation,
- transportation,
- climate change, and
- policy implementation.
- we manage a portion of the second largest renewable energy incentive program in the world.
- we are the energy center (energycenter.org)
on recreation ... we use portable solar panels to power LED's for lighting when we go camping.- on home power ... we purchase renewable energy from utility scale wind. all of our bulbs are CFL's.
- on kitchen appliance ... ALL of my appliances are EnergyStart where EnergyStar was an option.
- during our recent home renovation, we used no VOC paint and installed cork floors in our kitchen and laundry area.
DF needs to remember that this is not a contest,
it's a cutural shift.

Gives away information? TF has not discovered a true axiom of the world, there is no such thing as "free". How much of the "free" information that TF gives away is unavailable from other sources, gratis? Is there environmental waste in maintaining an office for people who give away free information available otherwise?
How much potable water is used making paper napkins, trucking them and disposing of them? Also, our potable water comes from a local source (unlike the SD potable water, which comes from environmentally unfriendly dams, canals, tunnels, structures, etc.). How many gallons of potable water are wasted in process and transport for every gallon of potable water that falls onto the irrigated, lush lawn of TF's?
If TF was competent in energy analysis, he would not draw so much attention to his tankless DHW heater. Compare the net efficiency and environmental cost of a biodiesel fired, indirect, indoor water heater (well insulated) with the natural gas fired tankless unit (remember, natural gas does not just come out of a pipe in the ground). However since he works for a quasi-governmental agency that gives away information, we have reason to doubt his chops.
TF writes about his firm’s minivan powered by natural gas as if that doesn’t pollute (NOx, CO, CO2). Even leaving the effect of CO2 out of the picture (our current administration does not think it does, in fact, they are not willing to admit CO2 exists), a natural gas minivan is more of an R&D project than a real strike against environmental pain (natural gas has to be processed, transported and distributed and recompressed at the point of use).
My company makes more than one thing. My company make a product AND we make profit. Making profit is American and all things good. Quasi-governmental information sharing is communist. If you read Atlas Shrugged, this form of employment must be eliminated. If you listen to the early 21 century business-talk, this function will be outsourced. Either way, TF needs to watch himself. The self-important name of TF’s company shows us their paper tiger-ness (think about when you hear “I don’t mean to be rude, but...”).
Everything is a contest, unless you are a dirty-lefty-liberal, then winning does not matter (Atlas Shrugged tells us what this attitude will bring). By not acknowldeging the importance of competing, TF shows us he already lost (I suspect TF is a cut-and-run, tax-and-spend waffeler).
